Sprint Admits to Using Carrier IQ on Its Network

Sprint has released a statement about its use of Carrier IQ, insisting that they respect and protect the “privacy and security of each customer’s personally identifiable information and other customer data.” Their full statement follows:

“Carrier IQ provides information that allows Sprint, and other carriers that use it, to analyze our network performance and identify where we should be improving service. We also use the data to understand device performance so we can figure out when issues are occurring. We collect enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to address any connection problems, but we do not and cannot look at the contents of messages, photos, videos, etc., using this tool. The information collected is not sold and we don’t provide a direct feed of this data to anyone outside of Sprint.”

“Sprint is well known for our serious commitment to respecting and protecting the privacy and security of each customer’s personally identifiable information and other customer data. A key element of this involves communicating with our customers about our information privacy practices. The Sprint privacy policy makes it clear we collect information that includes how a device is functioning and how it is being used. Carrier IQ is an integral part of the Sprint service. Sprint uses Carrier IQ to help maintain our network performance.”

iPhone Launch Helped Sprint Shatter Record

Sprint’s launch of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S helped them make company history. From Sprint’s Press Release:

“Sprint today reported its best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales for a device family in Sprint history with the launch of iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. We reached this milestone at approximately noon CT/1pm ET. The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed our expectations and validates our customers’ desire for a truly unlimited data pricing plan.”

I wonder what percentage of Sprint’s iPhone customers are existing iPhone users coming from either AT&T or Verizon for the “truly unlimited data pricing plan.”

Apple iPhone 4S Pre-Order Sales Anything But Underwhelming

It appears consumers did not get the memo that Apple’s new iPhone 4S was underwhelming. Both AT&T and Sprint have reported on their initial iPhone 4S orders and the results are very good. A couple notable quotes from AllThingsD:

AT&T: “AT&T has seen extraordinary demand for iPhone 4S, with more than 200,000 preorders in the first 12 hours alone, the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had,” an AT&T representative told AllThingsD

Sprint: “We are very, very pleased with the initial first day of iPhone 4S preorders,” Sprint Vice President of Product Development Fared Adib said in a statement. “Today’s sales and the overall customer experience greatly exceeded our expectations.”

Apple sold out of iPhone 4S pre-orders, pushing back the ship date by up-to two-weeks.

Verizon has yet to release a statement on their iPhone 4S sales results.
